Dovetail Drawers

Durable, versatile, and fully customisable, wooden drawers are an excellent addition to any home.

However, for your clients to get the most out of them, they must ensure they’re taking good care of them.

In this blog, the Probox experts explore the top five cleaning and maintenance tips you can give to your customers, to maximise the lifespan of their wooden drawers.

Clean regularly

Like most things, wooden drawers need to be cleaned regularly to be kept in good condition.

To do this, advise your clients to:

Drawer Boxes

Empty the drawers

Before anything, the drawers need to be emptied, so take everything out and put it safely to one side before cleaning.

Dust it out

Once the drawers have been emptied, grab a clean, dry cloth or soft brush and wipe away any dirt, crumbs, and dust particles.

For those experiencing a large amount of build-up, we recommend vacuuming inside to ensure the drawer is free from all dirt and debris.

Clean with a gentle solution

When it comes to cleaning the wood, use mild cleaning solutions, like warm water with a drop of dish soap, to gently wipe down the insides, scrubbing a little harder for particularly stubborn stains.

Wipe dry immediately

Leftover moisture that’s left to sit for too long can damage the wood, so soak up any excess with a clean, dry cloth.

Polish the hardware

The outside is just as important as the inside, so polish all drawer handles and knobs with the same gentle cleaning solution, removing any fingerprints and giving them a little extra shine.

Avoid excessive weight

Overloading drawers can put unnecessary pressure on the drawer runners, so advise your clients to take their runner capacity into consideration when loading their drawers.

We also supply Blum Movento Drawer Runners, which boast incredible load-bearing capacities of up to 70kg, depending on the length required, so you can be confident you can provide a suitable solution for their needs.

Lubricate runners regularly

Speaking of drawer runners, your clients should lubricate them at least twice a year – every 3-6 months or so – for optimal drawer functionality. This is especially important in high-use areas like kitchens, where drawers endure frequent attention.

If your clients are unsure of when they need to lubricate their drawer runners, tell them to keep an eye out for the following red flags:

  • Drawers that are difficult to open and close
  • Grinding or scraping noises
  • Visible dirt buildup

Advise them to clean runners thoroughly to remove any buildups of dirt, dust, and other debris, before applying a high-quality lubricant and testing to see if the drawer opens and closes smoothly.

However, this isn’t necessary for the Blum Movento Runners, that we supply, as they’re permanently lubricated.
